Oakland Booking Reports Search

Oakland booking reports are created when the Oakland Police Department or other agencies arrest someone in the city and the person gets processed into Alameda County jail. The county sheriff handles all jail bookings, while OPD manages its own arrest and incident reports. If you are trying to search for booking records from an Oakland arrest, you will need to check the Alameda County inmate locator for custody data and the OPD records unit for police reports. Both sets of records are public and open to anyone under California law.

Alameda County Handles Oakland Bookings

Alameda County runs the Santa Rita Jail at 5325 Broder Boulevard in Dublin, about 25 miles east of downtown Oakland. This is where people arrested in Oakland get booked into county custody. The booking record includes the person's name, charges, bail amount, booking date, and physical details. The Alameda County Sheriff maintains these records and provides public access.

The county sheriff runs an inmate locator on its website. You can filter to see only bookings from the last 24 hours or search the full roster. Names of people arrested by Oakland and other Alameda County agencies appear here, with some exemptions under Government Code Section 6254(f) for certain cases. The sheriff's administration office is at 1401 Lakeside Drive, 12th Floor, Oakland, CA 94612. Phone: (510) 272-6878. Santa Rita Jail can be reached at (925) 551-6500.

Oakland Police Department Records

OPD handles its own records separately from the county. The records unit number is (510) 238-7143. Copies cost $0.05 per page, which is among the lowest rates you will find anywhere in California. That fee reflects the direct cost of duplication as allowed under the Public Records Act. The city also runs a public records request portal through NextRequest where you can submit and track requests online.

The city of Oakland's NextRequest portal manages public records requests for the police department and other city agencies.

Oakland police department public records portal for booking reports

Submit requests for Oakland police reports, arrest documents, and other OPD records through this online portal.

The OPD arrest report and the county booking report overlap in some details but they are not the same document. The police report covers what the officer did, what they saw, and why the arrest happened. The booking report from Alameda County covers the processing that happened at Santa Rita Jail. You may need both to get a full picture of an Oakland arrest. The OPD portal handles the police report. The county inmate locator handles the booking data.

Oakland Booking Report Access Laws

The California Public Records Act at Government Code Section 7920.000 covers all Oakland and Alameda County agencies. Anyone can request booking reports. No reason is needed. Agencies must respond within 10 days. Government Code Section 7923.600 lists the specific booking data that law enforcement must release to the public. This includes names, physical descriptions, arrest times, booking times, charges, bail, and the custody location.

The Alameda County Sheriff has noted on its website that some names may not appear in the inmate locator based on exemptions in the law. Undercover officers, juvenile cases, and certain witness protection situations can lead to records being withheld. But for standard adult arrests in Oakland, the booking data is public.

Note: Oakland police report copies cost just $0.05 per page, one of the lowest rates in California.

Criminal History Records for Oakland

Penal Code Section 13300 separates public booking data from restricted criminal history records. An Oakland booking report showing one arrest is public. A full criminal history covering all past arrests statewide is restricted. Only the subject of the record or authorized agencies can access it. Use the California DOJ Record Review process to request your own criminal history. The fee is $25 and requires Live Scan fingerprints.

The CDCR inmate search is a separate state tool. It shows people who were sentenced to state prison after convictions that may have started with an Oakland arrest. The CDCR database includes current facility location, admission date, and parole hearing dates. It does not cover people still in Alameda County jail awaiting trial or sentencing.

Sealing Oakland Arrest Records

People booked after an Oakland arrest who were not convicted can petition to seal the record. Penal Code Section 851.91 allows this when charges were dismissed or the person was acquitted. File the petition in Alameda County Superior Court. Once granted, the booking report and arrest records get sealed from public view. They will not appear in the Alameda County inmate locator or in other public searches.

Penal Code Section 851.8 covers factual innocence cases. If the court finds you were truly innocent of the Oakland arrest, records are sealed and destroyed after three years. Penal Code Section 13665 limits booking photo sharing on social media. OPD and the Alameda County Sheriff cannot post booking photos for nonviolent offenses unless specific exceptions exist. Posted photos must come down within 14 days.

Use California VINE to get free custody alerts for people booked after Oakland arrests. VINE sends phone, email, or text notifications when someone is released, transferred, or escapes from Alameda County custody. Sign up with the person's name or booking number.
